Massive Xmas ’09 App Sales Boost: More than 6x increase
This holiday season most App developers get a very nice present from the Apple App Store. Download numbers for Apps seem to have increased more than 6-fold during December 25, 2009, when compared to the Friday before that. In the following days the increase is less, but still very noticeable.
Below is the graph of our iSteam app (red line is rank, blue bars are sales):
The numbers:
Fri, Dec 18, 2009: 241
Sat, Dec 19, 2009: 283
Sun, Dec 20, 2009: 292
Mon, Dec 21, 2009: 244
Tue, Dec 22, 2009: 280
Wed, Dec 23, 2009: 264
Thu, Dec 24, 2009: 408
Fri, Dec 25, 2009: 1,506
Sat, Dec 26, 2009: 954
Sun, Dec 27, 2009: 683
So what’s up?
This dramatic increase is most likely due to people increasing spending and staying home more during the holiday season. An interesting thing to note is that on the same date last year, the increase was reported to be in the 3x-4x range. Is the iPhone growing even faster in popularity? That would be even more surprising considering that there are more products competing out there this year, most notably Google’s Android.
Happy holidays!
iSteam’s Open Letter to TechCrunch

GreatApps Ltd.
Dear TechCrunch,
We are the authors of the “iSteam” app for the iPhone. We are big fans of your website, and were surprised to see that a publication like yours would provide misleading information in one of your recent articles by Roi Carthy:
You mention the following about our competitor app “iFog”:
- “it was bought 200,000 times for $0.99 a pop”.
- “As soon as it was released, iFog climbed the iPhone app charts, reaching the number one download spot in most European counties and even made it into the top 20 in the US version of the App Store”
While we do not know the exact figures for “iFog”, we can tell you that our own “iSteam” app, having been featured in major publications worldwide and peaking as the #1 free app in the majority of the iTunes Stores (including US, Canada, UK & Australia), is now near the 200,000 mark for paid downloads. Judging by the app store rankings we are quite confident that the 200,000 number you give for “iFog” is at least an order of magnitude more than the real number, therefore greatly misleading your readers.
Regarding your second claim, we also challenge the validity of it and challenge the authors of “iFog” to provide information regarding the countries where they hit the number one spot or even made it to the top 5.
Moreover, the “iFog” authors claim on their iTunes page that their app is “as seen on national TV”, and “Dana Carvey’s favorite app”, both statements of questionable validity.
Hopefully you can update your article to better reflect the real information upon confirming the actual data with the developers.
From your loyal readers at GreatApps.
Best regards,
Kostas Eleftheriou

Well blow me, look what’s new!
iSteam just got steamier.
Introducing iSteam 2.0. Still hot but definitely cooler, this version of iSteam no longer has sounds resembling a “constipated horse.” And for our users concerned that “someone is strangling my grandma” worry no more! iSteam now squeaks rather than squeals! Our other hot new features include:
* The Slow-Blow. (That’s not as rude as it sounds-You can now see more realistic steam effects, gradually fogging up your screen.)
* Control at your fingertips. Literally. Using our new TapForce technology, you can choose your own finger size and pressure options.
* Choose to switch droplets on or off. (You can also switch off sounds, although you surely won’t want to now we’ve got rid of that constipated horse!)
*Feeling lazy? Create a work of art with one of our shiny new pre-loaded backgrounds and save it with just one click.
*User friendlier menu.
*Take a one-click wander into what Great Apps are up to.
The new iSteam 2.0: Let yourself get hotter and steamier. Go on. You know you want to…
A New Zen
It seems our last version of Zen Piano got some of you a bit strung-up! Not being budding pianists ourselves, it seems we went a bit off-key! But you soon told us what we could improve and we’ve listened.
You wanted more realistic sounds. To be able to play chords. To roll your fingers along the keys and get an instant response. Like on a real piano. Well now we’re playing from your song-sheet and Zen Piano 1.1 has all that and more!
*Multi-touch keys – chords
*Sliding finger response.
*More realistic pitch.
*Instant touch-feedback.
Now you really can create a Masterpiece.
The new Zen Piano is Grand indeed with a shinier new splashscreen and faster loading times. You wouldn’t wait for the real thing to boot up would you?! Also compatible with OS 2.0 for those of you who haven’t updated yet, we hope the new Zen Piano makes for a happier tune. Give it a tinkle today…
Tap your Zen
Fans of GreatApps will notice we’ve been somewhat quiet of late. That’s because we’ve been working on how to make a lot of NOISE with our brand new technology. And we think we’ve done it! We love the iPhone. But we couldn’t help noticing that something was, well, missing. What if the user could get feedback depending not on how fast or where they hit the screen, but how hard?! So we got to work to make just that! Cue our first app to showcase our new technology: Zen Piano. It really is a masterpiece!
Free for a limited time only, you really can tap into your musical side with force-sensitive piano keys. Using our new TapForceTM technology, you can bang out a tune at full volume or soften the tone with more gentle taps. Capture it all with the Record feature and when you’ve created your Grand Melody, play it back to your friends. It’s music to our ears!
Coming soon: Now that we’ve got our new technology tapped, the possibilities are endless. Keep your eye on the iTunes Store for our next hard-hitting App. It’s gonna be cracking…
